UGWU ONYEAMA HORROR CRASH: FIVE KILLED, 18 INJURED AS DISTURBING SCENES EMERGE FROM ENUGU-ONITSHA EXPRESSWAY
Five people have been confirmed dead and 18 others injured following a horrific multiple-vehicle crash at Ugwu Onyeama along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway in Enugu State.
The crash occurred at about 3:18 p.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2026, near the Liquefied Natural Gas, LNG, plant at the Ugwu Onyeama axis, bringing traffic to a standstill and leaving a trail of destruction on the busy highway.
Footage obtained by Eke TV from the scene captures the disturbing aftermath of the collision, including badly damaged vehicles, scattered debris and injured victims lying along the roadway as people gathered around the scene.
One of the videos shows a badly damaged car with significant impact damage to its side, while another captures debris and wreckage scattered across the road. In another parti
cularly distressing scene, several injured victims can be seen lying on the highway awaiting assistance.
Eke TV has exercised caution in the use of the footage and does not independently establish the identities or medical status of individuals shown in the videos. The images, however, underscore the severity of the crash and the urgency of the rescue operation that followed.
The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, confirmed that 25 people were involved in the accident, comprising 13 males and 12 females.
The road safety agency said five people — four males and one female — were confirmed dead, while 18 others sustained injuries.
Three vehicles were involved in the crash: a Dongfeng trailer, a Mitsubishi L300 commercial bus and a Honda car.
The force of the collision left the vehicles severely damaged, with emergency responders required to evacuate victims from the crash scene.
According to the FRSC, its personnel, patrol vehicles and an Intensive Care Unit ambulance arrived at the scene approximately nine minutes after the accident was reported to the Enugu Sector Command at about 3:25 p.m.
The injured victims were evacuated to Tex Hospital at Ninth Mile Corner for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at Ekochin Morgue, Ninth Mile.
Traffic control operations were also deployed around the accident scene as responders worked to rescue victims and clear the damaged vehicles and debris from the highway.
Preliminary findings by the FRSC indicate that wrongful overtaking and speed violation may have contributed to the crash.
The latest tragedy has renewed concerns over road safety around the Ugwu Onyeama axis, a mountainous and heavily travelled section of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway that has witnessed a number of serious crashes over the years.
The graphic scenes captured shortly after Thursday’s collision also provide a sobering picture of the consequences of dangerous driving on the nation’s highways, particularly when heavy-duty vehicles, commercial buses and private cars share the same road.
The Enugu-Onitsha Expressway remains one of the major transportation routes in the South-East, carrying a heavy volume of passenger and commercial traffic daily.
Motorists travelling through the Ugwu Onyeama area are therefore being urged to exercise extreme caution, reduce their speed, avoid dangerous overtaking and obey all traffic regulations.
The FRSC has repeatedly warned that excessive speed and risky overtaking remain major contributors to fatal crashes on Nigerian highways.
For the families of those who died, Thursday’s crash has brought an abrupt and devastating loss. For those injured, attention now turns to their recovery and continued medical care.
Eke TV News will continue to monitor the situation and provide verified updates from the FRSC, hospitals and other relevant authorities as more information becomes available.
As of the latest official confirmation, five people have died and 18 others were injured in the Ugwu Onyeama crash.
