Senator Osita Ngwu Flags Off Ugwuoba Road Construction, Promises Asphalt Before December 2026

ENUGU, NIGERIA — The long-awaited reconstruction of the Agolo–Efulu–Aguabosi–Ugwuoba Road has taken a significant step forward following the official flag-off of the project by Senator Osita Ngwu, who has assured residents that the first phase of the road will be asphalted before December 2026.

Senator Ngwu, who represents Enugu West Senatorial District in the National Assembly, gave the assurance during the flag-off ceremony in Ugwuoba, Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State. He also charged the contractor handling the project to maintain a consistent presence at the construction site and ensure that the assigned work progresses to completion.

The senator stressed that financial challenges should not become an excuse for abandoning the project, insisting that the contractor must demonstrate commitment to delivering the agreed scope of work.

He described the road project as an important intervention aimed at addressing longstanding transportation challenges and improving connectivity for communities along the route.

According to him, the road, which was opened in 1972, is now set for a major transformation that could improve mobility, facilitate commercial activities and strengthen economic opportunities for residents.

Ngwu reiterated his commitment to supporting development initiatives that respond to the needs of the people, noting that functional road infrastructure remains essential to community development, trade and the overall wellbeing of residents.

He also acknowledged the contributions of Enugu State Governor, Dr Peter Mbah, to the state’s infrastructure development agenda, describing the project as consistent with the administration’s broader efforts to improve public infrastructure and extend development to communities across the state.

Addressing residents at the ceremony, the senator attributed the intervention to the development agenda of the All Progressives Congress-led government and reaffirmed his commitment to seeing the first phase of the road asphalted before the end of 2026.

He appealed to the people to remain patient as construction progresses, noting that meaningful infrastructure development requires time and sustained commitment.

The senator further called on residents to continue supporting the APC at all levels of government, arguing that political continuity would help sustain ongoing development initiatives.

The event was attended by the member representing Aninri/Awgu/Oji River Federal Constituency, Engr. Anayo Onwuegbu, alongside government officials, political stakeholders and community representatives.

Beyond the road project, the senator’s visit also featured his participation in the annual Iri Ji (New Yam Festival) organised by the Ugwuoba Development Union, an occasion that brought together community leaders and residents to celebrate their cultural heritage and promote unity.

As part of the traditional celebration, Ngwu performed the ceremonial cutting of the yam on behalf of Governor Peter Mbah and other government officials and political stakeholders present at the event.

The festival provided an opportunity to celebrate the agricultural heritage and cultural identity of the Ugwuoba people while reinforcing the importance of community engagement in development efforts.

The flag-off of the Agolo–Efulu–Aguabosi–Ugwuoba Road is expected to raise public expectations regarding the timely delivery of the project, particularly the senator’s assurance that asphalt will be laid before December 2026.

For residents and road users, the critical test will be the pace of construction and the eventual delivery of a durable road that meets the transportation needs of the communities it serves.
