Federal Technical College Eke Takes Off, FG Says TVET Opens New Pathway to Skills, Innovation and Self-Reliance

ENUGU — The newly established Federal Technical College, Eke, in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, has commenced academic activities, marking a significant new chapter in the educational and economic development story of the community and its surrounding areas.
The Federal Government’s decision to operationalise the college is coming at a time when the country is placing renewed emphasis on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a pathway to producing young Nigerians with practical skills capable of supporting industry, entrepreneurship, innovation and national development.
The development also represents a major opportunity for Eke, which now hosts an institution designed not merely to provide classroom education, but to equip young people with practical knowledge and technical competence that can translate into employment, enterprise creation and further professional development.
Speaking to prospective pioneer students and parents at the college’s supplementary examination centre, the Principal, Mr Gideon Angbeye, described the institution as an important intervention in addressing Nigeria’s skills gap and preparing a new generation of technically skilled Nigerians.
The journey to the pioneer admission has already passed a major milestone, with the college’s first entrance examination held on June 13, 2026, as part of the process that led to the selection and placement of students into the Federal Technical College system. NABTEB subsequently announced the completion of the 2026 selection and placement exercise into Federal Technical Colleges across the country.
For the pioneer students of FTC Eke, the commencement of academic activities comes with substantial government support. According to the college management, the Federal Government has made provisions for the students to receive tuition-free education, uniforms and daily meals, making the new institution an avenue for families to access specialised technical education without the financial burden associated with many forms of schooling.
Beyond the immediate benefits of free education, the real promise of the college lies in the nature of training it is designed to provide. The programme places strong emphasis on practical competence, combining classroom learning with intensive workshop exposure so that students can develop the ability to apply what they learn to real-life technical and industrial challenges.
The structure of the programme progresses from foundational technical principles to intensive practical training and, ultimately, an integrated stage where students combine advanced practical applications with academic knowledge. Such an approach is intended to give students more than certificates, preparing them with skills that can be applied in workplaces, businesses, industries and other productive ventures.
The college is also expected to benefit from collaborations with established technical and research institutions, including the Projects Development Institute (PRODA) and the Scientific Equipment Development Institute (SEDI), as well as other corporate service providers. Such partnerships can expose students to modern technologies, industrial processes, innovation and experiential learning beyond the conventional classroom environment.

For students, the significance of FTC Eke therefore extends beyond gaining admission into a federal institution. The school provides a platform where young Nigerians can discover and develop practical abilities that could serve as a foundation for skilled employment, entrepreneurship, technological innovation and further education.
Technical education, when properly supported, can produce artisans, technicians, technologists, entrepreneurs and other skilled professionals needed across construction, manufacturing, engineering, information and communication technology, electrical and mechanical services, fabrication and several other areas of the economy. The broader federal policy direction has similarly emphasised expanding access to technical education and increasing the number of Federal Technical Colleges across the country.
The establishment of the college is consequently not only an educational development for Eke but a potential economic asset for the wider Udi area and Enugu State. As academic activities grow, the institution could create opportunities for interaction between the school, local businesses, artisans, industries and the host community, while also exposing young people in the area to skills that can position them for the changing demands of the labour market.
The management of the Federal Technical College, Eke, has also appealed to the host community to sustain the spirit of cooperation that has accompanied the establishment of the institution. The appeal is for Eke people to continue to support, protect and cooperate with the college as an institution that has come to stay in the community.
The management believes that a strong relationship between the college and its host community will be essential to creating a peaceful and productive environment in which teaching, learning, innovation and community development can flourish. Recent reports have also highlighted the call by the college leadership for a cordial relationship with the host communities, stressing that collaboration is important to achieving the objectives for which the institution was established.
For Eke, the arrival of the Federal Technical College presents an opportunity that goes beyond the walls of the school. It is an opportunity for the community to become part of a growing national effort to develop practical skills, encourage technological advancement and prepare young Nigerians for a future in which knowledge must increasingly be matched with competence.
As the pioneer students begin their academic journey, expectations are high that FTC Eke will grow into a centre where education meets practical skills, where ideas are converted into useful solutions and where young people are prepared not only to seek jobs but also to create value for themselves, their communities and Nigeria.
The commencement of academic activities has therefore opened a fresh chapter for Federal Technical College, Eke — one that places the community on the map of Nigeria’s expanding technical education landscape and gives its pioneer students the opportunity to become the first beneficiaries of an institution built around skills, innovation and productive learning.
