EKE: My People My Pride, As Prof. Obiora John Anichebe Reciprocates Love To Eke People
Umunem na umunnam, I am overwhelmed by the showers of encomium on me generated by my modest academic attainment of Professor of the University of Nigeria.
Truly, it is not by my might but by HIS grace! I have received several calls from distant lands. Without prodding, the news has gone viral and the Internet is abuzz – promoted and propagated by our own effervescent, indefatigable and ubiquitous EKE TV network.
In all this, I feel highly honoured, humbled and eternally grateful! I see this as a call to more service. However, what I did was just perseverance in the face of daunting odds. It’s a no big deal. I still remain who I am – your homeboy, Obiora John nwa Anichebe.
The reality is that I am a very proud son of Eke, with her rich history and culture. The Eke blue blood runs deep in my veins and arteries! So, I can never forget my roots!
Over the years, I have been grilled and drilled to appreciate, ingest, digest, assimilate and internalize Eke values and her panoramic world view. As a kid, I was initiated into the masquerade cult. I drank pure and undiluted Ajali water. As a young lad in the 1970s, I trekked to the Ajali River everyday to scoop water. That was the only opportunity for one to have a clean bath. Then in the morning, one would just wash his legs, hands, face, then rub Jeleen Vaseline oil and ran to school with his small aluminum school box.I trudged to the distant farm lands of Nwiyi, Ugwuaguobu, Ofiakwu, Aguobu Oma etc in search of fertile soil to cultivate akidi and okoto. All these – going to school, Ajali stream and the distant farmlands were made on barefoot! But no regrets today as I see all these trajectories as the purification and fortification process that defined the Eke indigenes of that era.

Emphasis now should be how all hands will be on deck to take our dear Eke to a higher level. On our part, for many years now, we, at the UNN, have consistently and noiselessly ensured that our teeming candidates of Eke origin are able to secure admission into our University without somebody paying a dime to anybody. This is verifiable. This is a testament to my intentional commitment to make Eke great again. It has become imperative that we have to reinforce the existing structures in this regard to make the programme more fruitful and impactful.
I reassure our people that I will never ever misuse any opportunity or shirk in my responsibility to elevate our people as much as practicable. This isn’t just a promise. It ‘s a pledge!
I pray God to straighten our paths to actualize our individual dreams and aspirations.
Once again, thanks for your goodwill and good wishes. And may God bless you all abundantly!
Prof Obiora J. Anichebe, UNN.
