Udi/Ezeagu 2027: Festus Uzor Rides on Experience as Voters Reassess the 2023 Choice

The political temperature in Udi/Ezeagu Federal Constituency is rising ahead of the 2027 general election, with the candidacy of former Enugu State House of Assembly Speaker and former Chief of Staff to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Dr. Festus Uzor, generating renewed attention across the constituency.
Uzor, who emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Udi/Ezeagu, is returning to a political contest he knows well, but this time with a significantly different political platform and a record of public service that his supporters believe gives him an advantage.
At the heart of the emerging contest is also a growing debate over the 2023 election and the performance of the incumbent representative, Hon. Sunday Umeha.
Among constituents, there is a strong argument that the 2023 outcome did not produce the level of representation they expected. They point particularly to Umeha’s relative lack of previous experience in the National Assembly and argue that his emergence was aided by the wider political momentum generated by Peter Obi and the Labour Party during the 2023 elections.
Those critics now describe the 2023 decision as a political miscalculation and argue that the 2027 election provides an opportunity for voters to reassess their choice.
That argument, however, remains a political position rather than an established consensus of every voter in Udi and Ezeagu. The election will ultimately determine whether the sentiment translates into votes.
The Uzor alternative
What makes Festus Uzor’s candidacy particularly significant is the breadth of his previous public-service experience.
Uzor has served as a member and Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, commissioner in the Enugu State Government, Federal Commissioner representing Enugu State at the National Population Commission and Chief of Staff to former Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
His supporters contend that such experience could give him a shorter learning curve at the National Assembly compared with a politician entering federal legislative politics for the first time.
The argument is straightforward: Udi/Ezeagu needs a representative who understands government from the inside, knows how institutions work and can translate constituency demands into legislative action.
Whether that experience will ultimately translate into better representation is a question voters will have to determine.
The 2023 lesson
The 2023 election remains central to the political narrative.
Umeha’s victory occurred during a period when the Labour Party and Peter Obi enjoyed enormous electoral momentum across parts of the South-East. For some voters and political observers in Udi/Ezeagu, the result reflected that wider political wave as much as the individual strength of the candidate.
Four years later, the political environment has changed.
The enthusiasm surrounding the 2023 election has given way to a more performance-conscious political climate in which constituents are increasingly asking what their representatives have achieved, what they have brought home and how effectively they have represented their communities.
It is against this backdrop that Uzor’s campaign is positioning his experience as a major selling point.
The Politics of Opening Doors: Festus Uzor and the Next Chapter of Opportunity
Beyond politics: education and healthcare
Uzor’s political profile has also been reinforced by activities associated with the Dr. Uzor Cares Foundation.
In 2026, the foundation announced a N13.7 million bursary programme for 137 undergraduates from Udi and Ezeagu, while it also announced plans to support health-insurance coverage for vulnerable residents in the two local government areas.
For his supporters, these initiatives demonstrate that Uzor’s interest in the constituency extends beyond election periods.
They point to education and healthcare as evidence of a development philosophy centred on human capital and grassroots intervention.
A contest about experience and performance
The 2027 Udi/Ezeagu contest is therefore shaping up around two competing narratives.
One side points to the experience of Festus Uzor and argues that the constituency needs an experienced hand capable of navigating the complex machinery of the National Assembly.
The other side will inevitably defend the record of the incumbent and make its own case to voters.
For Uzor, his advances tend to convince voters that his long history in public service represents more than political experience—that it represents the capacity to deliver measurable results.
For Umeha, the challenge is equally clear: demonstrate that his first term has produced enough tangible achievements to persuade voters that 2023 was not a mistake.
That is where the 2027 election could become fundamentally different from 2023.
The debate is increasingly moving away from political excitement and toward experience, performance, accountability and results.
And in that debate, for Festus Uzor, his Constituents believes his record gives him a compelling case.
Whether the people of Udi and Ezeagu agree that the 2023 choice should be reconsidered—and whether they regard Uzor as the preferred alternative—will ultimately be decided by the electorate.
But one thing is already evident: the 2027 race has placed Festus Uzor’s political experience firmly back at the centre of the Udi/Ezeagu conversation.
