Akueme Declares Security Paramount in Ukana, Moves to Strengthen Community Protection and Security Operations
By Ike Enemoh
Chief Maurice Emeka Akueme has reaffirmed his commitment to the safety, welfare and sustainable development of the people of Ukana, declaring that the protection of lives and property must remain a paramount priority in the community.
Akueme made the position known during a strategic meeting with members of the Uwani Local Security Outfit at the Oboli village square in Umuozolu, a village in Amaebota, Ukana Town, over the weekend, where issues surrounding community security, public safety and the protection of lives and property were carefully considered.
The meeting, which brought together Chief Akueme and members of the local security outfit, underscored the growing importance of strengthening community-based security structures in the face of security concerns affecting residents, farmers, businesses and public facilities.
Although the specific operational matters discussed at the meeting were not made public, the engagement reflected a broader determination to ensure that Ukana remains a safe environment where residents can live, work, farm, conduct businesses and pursue their legitimate aspirations without fear.

For Chief Akueme, security is not merely a law-enforcement responsibility. It is a fundamental requirement for community development and the wellbeing of the people.
Recent incidents of theft, robbery and vandalism have continued to raise concerns within communities, with public community facilities, private equipment and other valuable assets sometimes becoming targets. Farm produce and other agricultural investments are also vulnerable to theft, creating additional challenges for residents whose livelihoods depend heavily on farming and related activities.
Such incidents do not only result in immediate financial losses. They can undermine confidence, discourage investment, disrupt livelihoods and threaten the collective progress of a community.
It is against this backdrop that Akueme’s engagement with the Uwani Local Security Outfit assumes particular significance.
His approach reflects an understanding that effective security requires more than occasional intervention. It demands sustained attention, cooperation, preparedness and the creation of an enabling environment in which security personnel can perform their duties effectively.
A key aspect of his interest is therefore the welfare and operational capacity of those entrusted with community security.
Chief Akueme has expressed interest in supporting measures capable of improving the working conditions of local security personnel, while also encouraging the provision of certain essential security equipment and gadgets that can enhance their ability to respond to threats and protect residents.
The emphasis on equipment is particularly important because community security personnel often operate under difficult conditions and require appropriate tools to carry out their responsibilities efficiently. A motivated security outfit, properly supported and equipped, is better positioned to prevent criminal activities, respond to incidents and provide reassurance to members of the community.
Beyond security itself, the intervention is consistent with Akueme’s broader interest in improving the lives and welfare of members of the community.
His commitment to Ukana is reflected not only in his concern for the immediate safety of the people but also in his broader interest in developments that can improve the quality of life across the community. For Akueme, meaningful development must address the everyday realities confronting ordinary people, including the need for security, protection of livelihoods and preservation of community investments.

The protection of lives and property, the preservation of livelihoods, the security of agricultural investments and the safeguarding of public infrastructure are all essential components of that vision.
A community cannot fully develop when its people are constantly worried about the safety of their homes, farms, businesses, equipment or public assets. Likewise, development projects and community investments can only achieve their intended impact when the facilities created are adequately protected.
The security personnel, in turn, expressed appreciation to Chief Akueme for his continued interest in the development and wellbeing of Ukana, particularly for the various developments and interventions he is bringing home to the community.
Speaking on behalf of the security personnel, the commander of the Uwani Local Security Outfit, Mr. Uchenna Akpudiogu, thanked Chief Akueme for his contributions to the progress of Ukana and for recognizing the importance of supporting those entrusted with protecting the community.
Akpudiogu assured Akueme that the personnel had taken note of his concerns and would respond to the confidence being reposed in them by carrying out their duties with greater diligence, vigilance and commitment.
He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and protecting lives and property, assuring that the security personnel would remain alert and dedicated in the discharge of their responsibilities. He also stressed the need for continued cooperation between the security outfit and members of the community, particularly in the timely sharing of useful information that could assist in preventing criminal activities.
The commander further assured that the personnel would continue to uphold discipline, professionalism and responsibility in their operations, while remaining committed to the safety of residents and the protection of community assets.
The assurance from Akpudiogu and the security personnel reinforced the central message of the meeting: that community development and community security must move hand in hand.
The strategic meeting therefore served as more than a routine engagement. It was a demonstration of the importance Chief Akueme attaches to preventive security, community cooperation and the protection of the collective interests of Ukana.
While the security outfit remains responsible for its operational duties, the broader success of community security will inevitably depend on cooperation among residents, traditional institutions, community leaders, security personnel and other relevant stakeholders.
Residents also have a role to play by remaining vigilant, protecting community assets, reporting suspicious activities through appropriate channels and supporting legitimate security efforts.
Chief Akueme’s latest engagement sends a clear message: the security of Ukana cannot be treated as an afterthought.
As the community continues to pursue social and economic advancement, safeguarding the people and their property must remain at the heart of every development effort.
For Akueme, the objective is ultimately bigger than security alone. It is about creating the confidence and stability necessary for people to prosper, while ensuring that the benefits of development are protected for the people and future generations.
And in Ukana, the message is becoming increasingly clear — a safer community is the foundation for a stronger, more prosperous and more united community.
